Chapter Eleven

All the furniture came the Saturday after they ordered it. It was kind of a reward for a damn hard week. Even though it was the second week Di had gone back to school, she’d gotten into trouble there. Twice. Dee knew it was because she was acting out over her parents being gone, but that didn’t make it any easier to deal with.

He was pretty thrilled, actually, to be moving into the main house. It gave legitimacy to his feeling of being a part of the family. He knew it didn’t matter to the baby, but the boys were ramped up and Di was pouting terribly in her room. Ash, though, had been generous and warm, giving him everything he asked for and more.

He was a little hurt at Di’s attitude. He would have thought she’d be happy he was living in the house with them now. He knew he should go talk with her, but he was buzzing a little over his new digs and he didn’t want her dragging his mood down.

Besides that, she would come around. He had to believe that.

“Take that up to the second floor, please.” Ash was directing. The master suite was painted now, as were Dee’s rooms, and it was like a new place.

Dee bounced on his heels. He nudged Ash. “This is fun, eh?”

“It is. You’re excited?” Ash grabbed one of the twins and tickled him.

Dee laughed along with Drew. “Yeah, I am. What about you? Making the place yours.”

“It feels better. Like I can sleep.”

“Have you still not been sleeping?”

“Better than I was. I have had some good dreams now.” Ash winked at him.

Dee chuckled like he was supposed to, but that didn’t keep him from feeling bad for Ash. He couldn’t help but feel like being forced to come home and look after the kids was so much better for Ash than staying where he’d been.

“So, whose room should we do first? Yours, Dee?” Ash grinned at him, blue eyes twinkling.

“Okay.” He wanted it done. Besides, Ash had a great room downstairs already, so if he didn’t get his done today there was no problem spending another night or two in the guest room.

“Okay, boys, would you like to bring a toy up and play while we’re working?” Ash suggested.

“Uh-huh. We play, Uncle Stinky.”

The boys were taking to Ash like fish to water, it was his Lady Di who was having troubles. He knew it hadn’t been that long, but Ash had been with them for nearly a month now. “I should…” check up on Di.

“Sure. Tell her I love her.”

Ash was more perceptive than he’d originally given the man credit for—that wasn’t the first time Ash had known what he was thinking. Dee nodded. “I won’t be long.” Hell, if she wouldn’t let him in, he wouldn’t be any time at all.

“Come on, boyos. Let’s go find a toy and grab little bit extra’s Pack and Play.”

Dee grinned. Ash was getting there. He was seeing fewer haunted
